The Gamble House represented an American-style which sat amidst an abundance of imitations and interpretations of classical European buildings, the influence for many mansions at the time. It was designed to be very suitable for the southern California climate, with a sleeping porch and beautiful transition spaces from the inside to outdoor patios, a garden and a pond. David and Mary lived in the house until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Cecil Huggins Gamble and his wife Louise Gibbs Gamble began living in the house after Julia’s death in 1944, and briefly considered selling it. They soon changed their minds, however, when prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior teak and mahogany woodwork white!
Design
Using Douglas fir posts and beams, redwood split shakes, local river stones, clinker brinks, and a creeping fig vine that literally and figuratively roots the house to its site, the Greenes skillfully choreographed a seamless integration of house and landscape. This integration reflects the topography, climate, and the relaxed, outdoor orientation of the southern California lifestyle. Pasadena’s lure among culturally minded and wealthy Midwesterners, combined with a building boom in the early twentieth century, made the city a viable, if short-lived, market for the Greenes’ costly work.

The house and furnishings were designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. The house, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978, is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California. The Gamble House was designed in 1908 by Pasadena architects, Greene & Greene as the winter residence for David and Mary Gamble. The Gamble House is the finest example of early 20th-century Craftsman architecture. It is preserved with all of its original furnishings which were also designed by the architects. Food and drinks are not allowed inside the house, guests are welcome to picnic outside on the grounds.
Gardens & Gables: Exploring the Gamble House Outdoors
The Gamble House, which was built by the Greene Brothers for the Proctor and Gamble family in 1908, is known as one of the most authentic and well-preserved examples of the Arts and Crafts movement that spread like a wildfire in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pasadena. Now, a video from Curbed gives a peek inside the Los Angeles architectural icon. It highlights a few of the elements that make the house exceptional and offers a brief tour and primer for those who haven’t been lucky enough to visit in person. In 1907 they decided to build a permanent home in their adopted hometown, and hired the firm of Greene and Greene to design the home.
David and Mary Gamble lived in the house during the winter months until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Cecil Huggins Gamble and his wife Louise Gibbs Gamble lived in the house beginning in 1946. They briefly considered selling it, until prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior woodwork white. In 1966, the Gamble family turned the house over to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California (USC) School of Architecture. The Gamble House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.[3][6] Today, two 5th-year USC architecture students live in the house full-time; the selected students change annually. The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture.

Seeing the home's floor plan up close is a unique and unforgettable experience. Yet, at its core, the Gamble House is a “Western” home, explained Jennifer Trotoux, director of collections and interpretation at the Gamble House. Where the house diverges from the Japanese aesthetic is how it defines spaces. The Greenes’ style is “enclosed,” explained Trotoux, whereas Japanese architecture is open and spacious with pavilion-style designs. The rafter tails extending beyond the house’s eaves evoke Japanese sensibilities, yet they were an invention of the Greenes and are rarely found elsewhere. Similarly, the home’s Japanese metal lanterns, which differ from traditional designs, are adorned with art glass.

At this time, the house passed to the eldest son, Cecil Gamble, and his wife, Louise, who temporarily tried to sell the dwelling in 1945. Efforts to build a high-rise on the Gamble House site came to a head in 1965. To avoid this, a cousin of the Gamble heirs--James Gamble--spearheaded the family effort to preserve the mansion. In 1966, the Gamble Family made an agreement with the City of Pasadena, CA, and the University of Southern California (USC) to maintain the house, and its furnishings, in perpetuity.

H. Richardson in Boston before heading out to California to visit their parents in 1893. At the same time the Gambles were selecting their lot on Westmoreland Place, a house designed by the firm of Greene & Greene was being built for John Cole on the adjacent property. Perhaps meeting the architects at the construction site, and certainly impressed with the other Greene & Greene houses in the Park Place neighborhood, the Gambles met with the brothers and agreed on a commission. The second floor of the Gamble House is accessed by a staircase located in the living room. The staircase is a beautiful piece of woodwork in its own right, and it leads to a large landing.
AD Classics: Gamble House / Greene & Greene
The bedrooms are designed to be comfortable and relaxing, with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The Gamble House was designed by brothers Charles and Henry Greene, who were famous for their Arts and Crafts architecture. The home was built for David and Mary Gamble as a winter residence, and they used it for that purpose until Mary's death in 1929. After David's death in 1923, the home was inherited by his daughters, who continued to use it as a vacation home. In 1966, they donated the Gamble House to the city of Pasadena, with the stipulation that it be used as a museum.
The developed style of Greene and Greene is very distinguishable in the design world, as their Japanese inspirations are incorporated into stain glass windows, details carved and formed with wood, joinery and joint pieces traditional to architecture in Japan. The architects worked closely with the Gambles in the design of the house, incorporating specific design elements such as the family crest among its motifs. Drawings for the house were completed in February 1908, and ground was broken in March. Ten months later, the house was finished, the first pieces of custom furniture were delivered, and The Gamble House became home to David Gamble, his wife Mary, and their youngest son Clarence. (Their oldest son Cecil was already working for Procter & Gamble; their middle son Sidney had just started at Princeton University.) Mary’s younger sister, Julia, also came to live with the family. The Arts and Crafts Movement in American Craftsman style architecture was focused on the use of natural materials, attention to detail, aesthetics, and craftsmanship.
The brothers, known collectively as Greene and Greene, were not largely “self-promoters,” explained Smith, who has been researching the pair for over 30 years. Yet, their designs, characterized by a Japanese aesthetic, have permeated Pasadena and Southern California, forever altering the landscape of American architecture. Preservationists had originally finished the exterior eaves with a type of soap stain, which ended up wearing off over the years. To protect the exposed structure, they started to apply a preservative, which ended up oxidizing and turned the exterior green and some of the wood black. When a team revisited the project to try and achieve its original colors, they removed the old preservative and replaced the original screens with ones made of copper.
It has patterned brick paving with planting areas, a large curvilinear pond, and garden walls made with distinctive clinker bricks and boulders. Paths made with large water-worn stones from the nearby Arroyo Seco are reminiscent of running brooks crossing the lawns. The overall landscape design and constructed garden elements are integrated with the architectural proportion and detailing. The triple front door and transom feature a Japanese black pine motif in plated (more than one layer) leaded art glass, highlighting the Asian influence that runs throughout the house. The woods, the low and horizontal room shapes, and the natural light that filters through the art glass exterior windows coexist with a relatively traditional plan, in which most rooms are regularly shaped and organized around a central hall.
She’ll be bringing it back to life based on the original vision that Mary Gamble had created. It had been her cherished cutting garden and was a place where Isabelle spent much of her childhood. Also found throughout the house are complete collections of art tile, pottery, and art glass that were compiled by the resident family.
Critical acclaim for their work did not come again until after World War II, when it was almost too late for the brothers to enjoy it—Henry died in 1954, and Charles followed in 1957. In a 1950 issue of House Beautiful, Elizabeth Gordon and Jean Murray Bangs resurrected the Greenes’ work as a vital link between the decorative excesses of Victorianism and the clean expressions of American Modernism. The house is located on a grassy knoll overlooking Pasadena's Arroyo Seco, a broad, seasonally dry river bed.
The Gambles moved into the completed home in 1909 and lived there until their deaths in the 1920s. The home stayed in the Gamble family until 1966, when it was deeded to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the USC School of Architecture. Today the home is a museum, with two 5th-year USC architecture students living in the house year-round. The third floor was planned as a billiard room but was used as an attic by the Gamble family.
Crews could not go into the building Wednesday because it’s structurally unsound, so they used demolition equipment to carefully remove parts of the building, and crews sorted through the debris to locate a person who was missing. Kruger said the first firefighters to arrive rescued several people jumping from the windows of the building. The four-floor building had 31 units and approximately 25 people are displaced, according to Kruger. According to a listing for the apartment building at Rosen Property Management, single- and double-occupancy rooms are rented on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.
‘Death trap’: Rooming house where fire killed two had multiple code violations
By 6 p.m., fire crews had the fire under control but “continued to extinguish hot spots for hours afterward,” maintaining a presence outside the house overnight, Ostroskey’s office said. The news came shortly after the first victim, fourth-floor resident Manuel Moreira, was identified. A second deceased victim inside the charred remains of a New Bedford rooming-style house was found by investigators on Wednesday as they seek to determine what caused a Tuesday fire that destroyed the building. The fire departments of Acushnet, Dartmouth, and Fairhaven provided mutual aid at the scene. Ambulances from Freetown, Lakeville, Marion, Wareham, and Westport supported New Bedford EMS with patient transport and care. The building was a 31-unit boarding house, built in 1907, with each unit locking individually and each floor sharing a common bathroom, according to residents.

The body, which has yet to be identified, was found on the second floor amid the rubble as firefighters demolished the top floors of the brick building. The body was pulled out of the building’s open facade by an excavator that was also gripping a mattress, according to witnesses. Investigators said the building had a working smoke alarm system tied to the fire department, but never had sprinklers. Third-floor resident Jason Gilmore said he was alerted by smoke alarms and faced fire and smoke when he tried to escape. The fire was mostly knocked down by about 7 p.m., though firefighters remained on the scene after 9 p.m. Third-floor resident Jason Gilmore said he was alerted by smoke alarms, and faced fire and smoke when he tried to escape.

The city of New Bedford along with nonprofit partners including the Inter-Church Council of Greater New Bedford have announced Rise Up For Homes as the official relief fund for individuals displaced by Tuesday’s rooming house fire on Acushnet Avenue. Firefighters worked through the night to knock down the flames, secure the building and remained working on demolition into Wednesday night. NEW BEDFORD — Firefighters discovered a second dead body Wednesday afternoon in the charred aftermath of a fire that ripped through a four-story rooming house in New Bedford’s North End. NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WJAR) — The body of a second victim was recovered Wednesday from the scene of a massive fire at a rooming house in New Bedford. The state sent a rehabilitation unit to support firefighters at the scene and a hazardous materials team to monitor air quality for potential harm to first responders and the community, Wark said. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell told media at the scene two residents of the building were missing as of Tuesday night, according to WCVB.

"At the same time of arrival of crews, we were able to rescue, I believe five tenants over ground ladders while simultaneously getting lines in place and started to attack the fire," he said. The fire was investigated by the New Bedford Fire Department, New Bedford Police Department, State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and state police assigned to the Bristol District Attorney’s office. Collectively, they determined that the fire started in Room 205, located at the left rear of the second floor. The building was previously owned by Dennis Arsenault, who owns at least one other rooming house in New Bedford.

"If we open a shelter for residents, they don’t get the assistance so it’s a trade-off," Hall said. "A shelter won’t stay open for more than a few days, so if we give them financial assistance it at least gives them a chance to go out and start seeing what they can find." Firefighters initially started searching inside the building for tenants, but were forced out as conditions rapidly deteriorated. Kruger said firefighters rescued at least three residents, while several others were forced to jump from their windows. The rooming-house-style building contained 31 apartments and around 24 occupants were rescued. A temporary shelter was set up at Seven Hills on Acushnet Avenue for victim services.
Engulfed in flames, the building sustained catastrophic damage while firefighters succeeded in preventing the fire to extend to other homes in the area. Firefighters searched the building as conditions deteriorated, eventually finding Moreira. Demolition and excavation equipment was used to find the second victim by Wednesday afternoon, Boston.com reported.
Heavy smoke was visible and residents were jumping out, or hanging from, windows of the four-story building at 1305 Acushnet Ave., said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the state Department of Fire Services. Five people were initially taken to the hospital, and two people were listed in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon. A massive fire earlier this week that killed two people and destroyed a 30-unit apartment building in New Bedford, Massachusetts, was started accidentally, according to state fire officials. As people jumped from windows to escape the burning building, one man told NBC 10 News that he’s just grateful to be alive. Five people were initially taken to the hospital, and two people were still listed in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon.
But they say it’s a process impeded by legal barriers, pandemic-related supply chain issues and high installation costs for properties with often low-income tenants. Moving to shut down a rooming house based on fire code violations could also mean tenants lose their homes. About two dozen people were displaced and were put into motels for the night. Emergency crews worked for over eight hours to put out hot spots in the building and said they will be on the scene throughout Tuesday night. Kruger said people were hanging out of windows waiting to be rescued, while others were jumping out of windows as firefighters arrived. All New Bedford fire trucks and off-duty personnel, along with several other local fire departments, assisted in battling the fire.
Crews were initially unable to enter the structurally unsound building Wednesday morning, but found the second victim in the afternoon using demolition and excavation equipment. More than two dozen people were put up in motels Tuesday night, New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger told reporters at the scene, according to WJAR-TV. The injured residents were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. As of Wednesday, one was listed in serious condition and another was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition, officials said. According to the New Bedford Fire Department, a passerby flagged down a police officer shortly after 4 a.m. A massive fire tore through a three-story building that was under renovation in New Bedford, Massachusetts, overnight, causing the structure to collapse, fire officials said.
It was not clear how long the building had been under renovation or if it was close to being completed. For New Bedford attorney and lifelong resident Philip Beauregard, news of the March 28 fire struck a special kind of chord that echoed of childhood memories and family legacy, his parents, R. Albert and Adrienne Beauregard, having owned and managed the building from May 1963 to April 1986.
Although the house is not as spatially adventurous as the contemporary works of Frank Lloyd Wright, or even of the earlier New England "Shingle style," its mood is casual and its symmetries tend to be localized. "On this tour, your docent will lead an exploration of the house and its history through rooms lined with rare woods, featuring handcrafted details, fixtures, and furnishings designed by the architects and unique to the house." The Gamble House was the best known of the Greene Brothers’ “ultimate bungalows,” a Pasadena house type notable for its grand scale, meticulous craftsmanship and range of architectural influences. Similar to the rest of the residences on the tours, a connection to the outdoors is inseparable from the history of the house and to this day, the restoration team is keeping the intention alive. In fact, Isabelle Greene—the granddaughter of Henry Greene and landscape architect—has been working on revamping the garden that has been forgotten for years.

A stellar example of Art & Crafts architecture, and a movie set to boot.
It also consisted of a spacious sitting room, which was decorated with five rugs that were designed by Charles Greene using watercolor. Across from the fireplace, there is a window that leads to the terrace, which overlooks the garden. The expansive window was designed to let light brighten the room during the late afternoon. At the far end of the room lie bookcases, a small games table, and a piano to offer entertainment and leisure. The piano was designed by the Greenes to blend into the paneling of the room.
THE GAMBLE HOUSE – ARCHITECTURE AS FINE ART
Shown here is one of the living spaces that’s filled with intricate woodworking and handcrafted furniture. The various spaces of the house are separated by different wood patterns on the floor. The chevron pattern denotes public formal spaces for entertaining, while the linear horizontal flooring presents private, informal spaces where the family would spend their time. The essential nature of architecture by Greene & Greene begins with intense attention to detail and craftsmanship, as their bungalows mark the height of the American Arts and Crafts style. The brothers were inspired by the concept of total design, or gesamtkunstwerk, which was stressed in the German-designed rooms at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase International Exposition in St. Louis. When they met David and Mary Gamble, they already had developed a list of rich couples who commissioned them to design their houses, with generous budgets and relatively free reign.
The strong ties to the outdoors are brought to the interior as well, through flowers and trees which are engraved in the windows, doors and lanterns. Indigenous Japanese shapes appear throughout the house, in the contour of the dining room table, the cloud lift in the transom bar of each window, the recessed handles on drawers and the ebony frame of the master bedroom furniture. We offer a variety of in-depth docent-led tours designed to focus on features of the house that we are not able to cover in a regular one-hour tour. These tours are conducted by docents with years of experience and a great deal of passion. These longer tours allow them to share with you their own excitement and knowledge while giving you a behind the scenes look at what make this historic landmark so special.
The kitchen is located on the south side of the house and is designed to be functional and efficient. Located in Pasadena, California, the Gamble House is one of the most iconic examples of American Arts and Crafts architecture. Built in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble, of the Procter & Gamble Company, the home has been a popular tourist destination ever since it was donated to the city of Pasadena in 1966.

At the time, many families from booming cities in the Midwest and on the East Coast were migrating to California in the hopes of a cleaner, warmer, healthier lifestyle. Many of them settled in Southern California and a large group set up camp in Pasadena. The drawings of the house were completed in February of 1908, the site ground-broken in March, and ten months later the house was completed and the first custom-built piece of furniture delivered. The family moved in immediately, and the house and all of it's specially-designed furnishings were officially finished in 1910. The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts-style architecture.
Gamble House (Pasadena, California)
The house, which was designed by lauded architects Charles and Henry Greene in 1908, was constructed for members of the Gamble family, of Procter & Gamble fame. The prominent amount of lush outdoor space and sleeping porches on the property exhibit an appreciation that the Greenes had for nature. Ever since the house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1978, it’s been owned by the City of Pasadena and is operated by the University of Southern California. Marking the 50th anniversary of the house being gifted to the city, this entire year has been filled with celebratory events including lecture series, tours, family-friendly days, and reunion events. They're also planning to reveal a documentary that's been in the works by well-known film producer, Don Hahn.
The beginner’s guide to Los Angeles
The Gamble House's floor plan is integral to its design, and understanding it can help you appreciate the home even more. Although the Greenes never traveled to Japan, they found inspiration closer to home, frequenting the Japanese Garden at The Huntington with its historic Japanese House and ceremonial teahouse. Although, the style did not fully blossom in their work until Charles visited the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair and its Japanese exhibits, which influenced their designs from there on out. The Gamble House, constructed in 1908 as a home for David B. Gamble, son of the Procter & Gamble founder James Gamble, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Today the home is a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public for tours and events.
Low-pitched roofs, deep terraces, and titanic, unscreened sleeping porches dominate the exterior of the house. The street view is especially striking for the monumentally deep eaves that shelter the northeast porch, which visually expands the boundaries and overall form of the house well beyond the confines of its shingled walls. In the early years of the twentieth century, sleeping porches were popular and national periodicals promoted them to health seekers and the culturally alert, many of whom came to Pasadena for the winter season. Nowhere did these porches proclaim more boldly the promise of outdoor life than in the Gambles’ winter residence.
The Greene brothers were known for their Ultimate Bungalows (think supersized Craftsman homes) which were heavily influenced by traditional Japanese architecture, and the Gamble House is without a doubt the finest example of their work. In real life it also bridges time, as the history of the home ties Pasadena’s past to its present. In 1895, David Gamble retired from his position in the family-run Proctor & Gamble Company and began to winter in Pasadena with his wife Mary. Gamble House tours (one-hour tours, specialty and group) are offered on Tuesdays, and Thursdays through Sundays. The mission of The Gamble House is to inspire the public’s appreciation and understanding of architecture as a fine art through the example of The Gamble House, the most complete and best-preserved work of American Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene.
Do we even dare say that tours of the house provide a chance to travel back in time? After all, The Gamble House famously served as Doc Brown's home, and his lab stood where the bookstore stands today, in 1985's beloved "Back to the Future." "The Gamble House exemplifies the work of Greene & Greene, illuminating the themes in their work that contributed significantly to Southern California's early 20th century artistic heritage and built environment." Inside peek-arounds were put on hold early in the pandemic, while outdoor tours gave devotees of the destination a look at the gardens, patios, and all of that charming brickwork.
In order to create such a precise work of art, the Greenes worked with Peter and John Hall, two brothers from Stockholm who were known as master woodworkers, stair builders, and furniture craftsmen. Additionally, they worked closely with Emil Lang, a glass artisan who was responsible for the stained glass that fills the house. The Proctor and Gamble family found the perfect fit when they hired the Greenes. Since their father was a respiratory physician, the brothers also believed in the importance of living a healthy lifestyle full of circulating air and sunshine. They incorporating this theory into each of the houses they designed in their careers. Beginning the tours with such an artisanal masterpiece showed us how much dedicated work goes into keeping these iconic structures alive.
